Please, No More Standing Ovations!!

Tuesday, Mach 2nd 2022

[08:10 pm] As I mentioned in my last blog, tonight is the 98th State of the Union, and Joe Biden will be addressing US Congress for the first time.

For those of you who are new or haven't read my last blog, here's a little contextualization:

Over the past 5 years, my friends have made a tradition of celebrating the State of the Union Address; they go bonkers for the SOTU. I have never been able to attend this holiday with everyone, so tonight I will be celebrating for the first time! However, my dear friend Audrey and I contracted COVID, so we had to celebrate with our friends virtually (sad face).

Each year Audrey comes up with a new list of rules of what happens during the speech, but they are always themed and branded towards that year's current events and pop culture. Essentially, it's an elaborate drinking game.

[08:17 pm] Now here's me in real-time getting ready to lose my State of the Union virginity.

[08:48 pm] I'm here!!! We ordered Dominos, and there are only 8 minutes until the festivities commence.

[09:10 pm] We're 3 minutes in. I knew this night included wine, but I did not know to what extent. Let me just show you how much I am expected to drink. Here are this years' rules (apparently I got lucky because she's made three pagers in the past).

[09:20 pm] I assumed a standing ovation would happen at the end, but I was so so so painfully wrong. There's already been 5 standing O's and we're not even halfway through. Considering it is a Tuesday night and I have a 9:30 am meeting tomorrow, I already know this won't bode well for me.

[09:30 pm] Audrey just texted some of our friends who were supposed to be with us, and they had the sweetest response.

[09:34 pm] This wine is horrible. At first it tasted kind of like apple juice, but the more I drink it, the more I hate it (sorry Franzia). It also reminds me of freshman year frat parties, so that's not helping.

[09:40 pm] I'm giving up. I can't keep count of all the times Biden says "folks" or receives a standing ovation because it's just happening so many times. Thankfully Audrey knows I'm blogging this and doing some other schoolwork, so thankfully I've been able to limit my consumption of the Franzia "Sunset Blush."

[10:11 pm] The 98th State of the Union address is officially over, and therefore I have fully experienced this insane holiday. Audrey is saying that it doesn't count 100% because we have COVID and there are usually more rules, but I personally think it counts.

[11:19 pm] As I mentioned earlier, I have a 9:30 am meeting tomorrow morning, so I am going to bed. I shall give you my thoughts and opinions of my first State of the Union holiday in the morning.

Wednesday, Mach 3rd 2022

[10:07 am] I made it to my meeting!! After I got home last night, I did a little bit of work and then knocked out. When the speech ended, Audrey and I ended up playing cards (recently I've been obsessed with old maid and ERS) and debriefed some of the key topics Joe Biden addressed. She ended up falling asleep on the couch, so I tucked her into her bed, kissed her forehead goodnight and headed home.
